In choosing a professional to assist you, it is important to know the key differences in their training and approach.
Psychologists are required to complete a 4-year university degree followed by a minimum of 2 years supervised practice in research and counselling. The government regulates who can be a Psychologist. Psychiatrists are Medical Doctors who specialise in Psychiatry. Only Doctors can prescribe medication. The government regulates who can be a Psychiatrist. Social Workers are required to complete a 4-year university degree which focuses on society and its influence on individuals. Social Workers study and practice counselling during their university course. The Australian Association of Social Workers is the professional representative body for the profession. Counsellors may or may not have formal training. There are no minimum requirements or government regulations for Counsellors. Some counsellors are members of PACFA, which is the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, Inc. It is a peak body for Member Associations which meet the agreed standards appropriate for Counselling and Psychotherapy professional practitioners in Australia.
