Medicare and Psychologists

In 2006, the Australian Government added psychological treatment to the Medicare system. It is now possible for people who are suffering a mental health issue to ask their doctor for a Mental Health Care Plan and a referral to a Medicare-endorsed psychologist. The doctor is responsible for determining if the mental health issue is covered by Medicare and whether psychological services are the best course of treatment for the issue. If approved, a Mental Health Care plan provides up to 12 one-hour psychological sessions a year.

The Australian Psychological Society has prepared a fact sheet that is helpful in understanding the new Medicare scheme. You can download a pdf of it here.
