Knights Templar

The Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple was a western Christian mititary organisation dating from 1096.  It was formed after the first Crusade, and lasted about 200 years.  It’s purpose was to ensure the safety of Christians who made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, but when that city was retaken, the Knights Templar lost popularity.  In 1312, the Order was disbanded.

As a military organisation, it is unlikely that they were involved with alchemy, though they did protect religious relics which were given to them by the Church.  One such object was a Shroud of Turin, which was later dated to be around the 1200’s, not the time of Christ.  It is possible they held the Emerald Tablet to protect it, though.  Although many authors have ascribed myths and speculation to the Knights Templar (including the DaVinci Code), their relation to “the Secret” is unclear, unproven and possibly unprovable.
