Why is it so hard to change?
Usually there is a reason we are doing just what we are. It may not be a good reason, or a healthy reason. We may not even know the reason. But there is probably a reason that doing this thing works for us, at least some of the time at this point in our lives. But recognising that we have outgrown that reason or that habit can be the first step in making a change.
We can’t change until we recognise there is a need to change.
Think about it. If you have a light that is burned out, until you recognise that it is burned out and needs to be changed, you won’t change it. It is the same for us. Until we see that we need to change, and have good reasons for it, we can’t change. We just won’t have the motivation.
There are many reasons you may like to consult a Psychologist for help. Psychologists are trained in facilitating the change process. They can help you clarify and set your goals, and tap into the motivation you need in order to make a change. A psychologist may be able to help figure out the reason it’s hard to change and help you remove those blocks. In making a change, we can ask for help from other people, but the motivation has to come from within.
There is an old joke that goes:
“How many Psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?”
“Only one, but the light bulb has to want to change.”
