According to Denis Watley “The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”
SMART goals are:
Specific - not just “lose weight”, but “join a walking group and walk 30 minutes 3 times a week”
Measurable - not just “lose weight”, but “lose 10 kilos”
Achievable - not “lose all the weight” but “lose 10 kilos at first, then set my sights on the next 10 kilos”
Realistic - not “lose all the weight by next week” but “focus on eating healthy food and exercise each day”
Timely - not “one day” but “starting today”
So a SMART weight loss goal would be “To lose 10 kilos at first, starting today, by eating healthy food and joining a walking group, walking for 30 minutes 3 times a week.”
This SMART system can be applied in any situation to set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely goals.
