Signs of Sleepiness

People differ on how sleepiness affects them, but here are a few signs of sleepiness that are common:

  • Loss of alertness
  • Yawning, especially if it is frequent
  • Bloodshot, tired or sore eyes
  • Difficulty focusing eyes, or eyes going out of focus
  • Blinking for longer than usual amounts of time
  • Slurred or lazy speech
  • Difficulty in keeping head up
  • Arms and legs feel heavy
  • Reduced ability to do physical tasks, such as pouring water into a glass without spilling
  • Reduced ability to do mental tasks, such as reading a clock
  • Slow reaction time
  • Lack of concentration, mind wandering or day dreaming
  • Clumsiness
  • Difficulty following a conversation
  • Disorientation
