How can you tell how much sleep you need? There’s a simple method for determining your personal optimal level of sleep - throw out your alarm clock !
According to Dr. Wilse Webb, a psychologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville and a sleep research pioneer, ”Whenever I ask an audience, how many people woke up by an alarm clock that morning, about two-thirds raise their hand. If that’s how you wake up every day, you’re shortening your natural sleep pattern.”3.
If you go without an alarm clock and allow your own natural rhythms to be re-established, your body will determine exactly how much sleep you need. Be aware that there may be an adjustment period while your body repays its sleep debt.
